IRS Form and Instructions for your solar energy tax credit
Talk with your accountant or familiarize yourself with your preferred tax preparation software to make sure you include your solar energy project in your tax filing correctly. We do not give tax advice, but we can offer you the resources on this page and in a recent blog outlining the incentive! This form and this instruction document may be helpful for you.
Did your solar project include a new roof, tree removal, or energy storage battery system? These may also have implications so speak with your tax preparer about those related expenses while you’re at it!
How to double check your solar project total cost
Here’s a handy diagram showing how to use our customer portal in Buildertrend.net to double check your solar project total costs, dates and related services. These may be relevant for your solar tax credit. Here are the steps to follow to make sure you wind up with the right number:
- Find your Contract Price: The big green arrow on the left in the graphic points to your solar contract price, the quote you would have originally signed. This example has $16,560.
- Check for any Change Orders that altered your total price: Your project might have had some Change Orders after the contract signing. That will affect the total cost that could be eligible for the tax credit! In the green menu along the top of the page, select Change Orders and note how they increase the contract. This could include different equipment, electrical work, etc. For example, if the customer had $4,000 of change orders in addition to the $16,560 contract that would be $20,560 potentially qualified for the 30% tax credit.
- Find and print your invoices as proof. The big green arrow on the right in the graphic points to Invoices. Just open and print, as a digital pdf or hardcopy.
