March is B Corp Month! Here’s why #WeGoBeyond

As we spring forward, we’re celebrating March as official B Corporation month and reflecting on the benefits of B Corp Certification. This year’s theme is “We Go Beyond.” The theme speaks to us because it’s what we aim to do every day.

With the rapid expansion of the solar industry, many types of installers are entering the market. While we hold great esteem for some, we’ve encountered others who appear to be focused solely on making a quick profit, without regard for their customers’ satisfaction. By being a B Corp, we have a clear direction and a certification that signifies our commitment to surpassing typical business practices. As a result, we are mandated to continually strive for excellence to maintain our certification.

Our story began when our founders Joe and Herve decided to build a values-based company. One that went above and beyond to balance making a profit with being a force for good for the planet and its people. One that proudly displayed its values and purpose not just to its clients and customers, but to the entire world.
That’s why Ipsun Solar joined the B Corp movement. For us, #BCorp Certification has always been more than a mark. It’s a badge we wear proudly to remind us why and how #WeGoBeyond.

We became a B Corp because we are serious about our mission to fight climate change by installing as many solar panels as possible. But being a B Corp means that we have a holistic view of our mission, too; it’s equally important to us to value our employees and our community, and put people over profit.

How Does a Company Become a B Corp?

B Corps are certified by B Lab, a nonprofit organization based in Pennsylvania, similar to the way TransFair certifies Fair Trade coffee or USGBC certifies LEED buildings. The B stands for “benefit,” and refers to benefiting workers, the community and the environment.

B Corp Certification measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance. The B Impact Assessment evaluates how our company’s operations and business model impact our workers, community, environment, and customers. From our supply chain and input materials to charitable giving and employee benefits, B Corp Certification proves our business is meeting the highest standards of verified performance.

B Corps Build Strong Communities

We agree with the B Corp movement that society’s most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone. The B Corp community works together toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of more high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.

As a solar company, we are acutely aware that the creation of good-paying jobs with a purpose is a primary responsibility. The solar industry is a steward for a huge amount of potential, not just to heal our climate and our environment, but also to heal our communities. Solar helps create energy equality and helps people find meaningful careers. While fighting climate change is our stated mission, we know that it’s more complicated than that, and being a B Corp helps us embrace the bigger picture by guiding us to best practices for employee and community care.

Ipsun’s VP and co-founder Joe Marhamati summed up our B Corp experience, saying, “I think the biggest benefit we’ve found from getting certified as a B Corp is that it results in a more democratic, fun, inclusive, meaningful workplace. This attracts customers and employees who want to be part of something bigger than themselves.”

Declaration of Interdependence

B Corps form a community of leaders and drive a global movement of people using business as a force for good. The values and aspirations of the B Corp community are embedded in the B Corp Declaration of Interdependence.

Ipsun is proud to be a B Corp and we work every day to fulfill the promise of this innovative, interdependent group of companies that do good for the world!
